I am using both on http://www.rlhanson-online.com and a new site I am developing, http://rksmanagementgroup.com is using the drop down box.

Both are completely customizable. The drop down menu can have images as the background which means you can have a gradient effect if you want or bordered image on each highlighted item. It uses <ul> and <li> tags which is better for the search engines also.
